Em 1998 a França foi campeã do mundo de futebol e logo após realizou o 8º Congresso Internacional de Obesidade (8th International Congress on Obesity).
Em 2002 o Brasil venceu a Copa do Mundo de futebol e nós somos a sede do 9º Congresso Internacional de Obesidade.
Em 2006 a sede será em Sydney. Será que a Austrália...? Acho muito improvável.
É bem mais provável que em um futuro não muito remoto tenhamos conhecimento de todos os genes que isoladamente (ou mais provavelmente em conjunto) contribuem para a obesidade.
De posse deste conhecimento poderemos identificar as causas da doença em cada paciente e, com os medicamentos que já temos e com os que teremos nos próximos anos, poderemos ajustar a terapêutica adequada para cada caso. A isto chamamos de Farmacogenética (Pharmacogenomics) e este será apenas um dos temas palpitantes que serão abordados no nosso congresso.
Se lembrarmos que há não muitos anos a obesidade era considerada apenas uma doença que acometia indivíduos com falta de caráter, auto-indulgentes, etc., e que quem tratava dos obesos eram médicos de segunda categoria com posturas éticas discutíveis, podemos ter uma idéia do tremendo progresso que foi alcançado neste campo, de qualquer ponto de vista que possamos ter.
Desde que foi criada, em 1986, a Associação Brasileira para o Estudo da Obesidade (ABESO) também não parou de crescer. Ela é uma das maiores e uma das mais respeitadas sociedades de obesidade do mundo. (Brazilian Association for the Study of Obesity, ABESO.) Sem nenhuma dúvida, a ABESO vem lutando há muitos anos para dignificar a obesidade e para tentar prevenir e controlar esta epidemia que assola também nosso país, além de divulgar o que de mais científico existe sobre o assunto.
Em meu nome e em nome do Prof. Geraldo Medeiros Netto, Presidente do 9º ICO, declaro o grande orgulho e satisfação que temos em poder realizar o 9º Congresso Internacional de Obesidade, o primeiro no Hemisfério Sul, o primeiro na América Latina, e também o primeiro do 3º milênio.
Esperamos que, como aconteceu com o futebol, sejamos neste aspecto também campeões.

In 1998 France won the Soccer World Cup, and soon after the country hosted the 8th International Congress on Obesity.
In 2002 Brazil won the World Cup, and it is now its turn to host the 9th International Congress on Obesity.
Once in 2006 the Congress will be held in Sydney, will Australia then...? I find it very unlikely.
However, it is far more likely that in a not very distant future all genes, which contribute to the causes of obesity single handedly or - what is more likely - in combination, will be made known to us.
Knowledge will allow us to identify the causes of this disease in each patient. Taking advantage not only of already existing medications but also of new drugs to be released in the coming years, we will be able to prescribe treatments and adjust our therapeutic approach on a case-by-case basis. Among others this subject known as Pharmacogenomics will be addressed in our Congress.
Until very recently, perhaps no more than a few years back, obesity was perceived as a disease that only afflicted irresolute and self-indulgent people. Patients were treated by unqualified physicians whose ethics could be easily challenged. Bearing this in mind, no matter how we see it, we have to be aware of the fact that much progress has been made in this field.
Ever since it was established in 1986, ABESO (the Brazilian Association for the Study of Obesity) never ceased to grow, and at present it is one the largest and most respected obesity societies worldwide.
Indisputably, ABESO has been striving for many years to approach obesity with greater consideration, attempting to control the epidemic, which has spread to this country as well. The Association is making available the newest and most recent scientific material on this topic.
On behalf of Prof. Geraldo Medeiros Netto, the chairman of the 9th ICO, and on my behalf, I would like to express our pride and satisfaction in hosting the 9th International Congress on Obesity, the first one to be held in the Southern Hemisphere and in Latin America, and, last but not least, the first Congress of this 3rd millennium.
We sincerely hope that we can be as successful in our attempt as our Brazilian team was in soccer.
